About the Society

The Society:

The Guildford Music Society at GURC was formed in 1992 to make music of a high standard widely available. It is the music society of the Guildford United Reformed Church.

Besides engaging well-established artists, we take much pleasure in encouraging the many talented young musicians of today. We also wish to foster the love of, and interest in, music among children.

Friends (Membership):

Following discussion at a recent AGM we decided to extend our membership by introducing the concept of Friends of Guildford Music Society at GURC.  We invite members, who have supported us so loyally over many years, and members of our much-valued audience, to become Friends.  A donation of £15 a year (or more, if you feel able) will entitle you to a £1 discount on each ticketed event except our charity concert, and an invitation to our special Friends‘ Event.  This offers an opportunity to meet our Committee and other supporters informally, with refreshments, and music provided by talented local young people.

We would also be delighted if you felt able to help occasionally with such things as serving refreshments during concerts, distributing posters, helping at the door and Committee work.  If this appeals to you, please complete the form and hand to one of our Committee members.

XY Strings:

XY Strings (www.xystrings.org), so-called because it used to be run by Guildford YMCA, is a community orchestra supported by Guildford United Reformed Church, and particularly by the church’s Music Society, which has a special interest in promoting music-making by young people. We are very grateful to the church for the use of its premises, in which we meet on Tuesday evenings in term-time from 5.45 – 7.15.

XY is essentially a teaching group for junior string players (of all ages!) of approximate standard Grades 2 – 5, with some very welcome help from a number of more experienced players.

We present a Carol Evening at Christmas, play in local music festivals, and give an annual Summer Concert.

New members are always welcome! just contact Gillian on gillian.lloyd@hotmail.com.
